Over 50 Gb of free base map data for the UK, excluding Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, based on Ordnance Survey OpenData
can be downloaded from the Download page
. The data is supplied as zip files each containing data for a 10 kilometre square tile. Each zip file contains a nominal 1:10,000 raster file, a 1:250,000 raster file, a 1:1,000,000 raster file and a Map Maker terrain file. You only need to download the tiles that you actually need.
Figure 1: Detail of enhanced 1:10,000 tile
The 1:10,000 image is based on the Ordnance Survey StreetView data but it has been enhanced to show more detail, including contours and slope shading. The image is provided as a TIF file pre-calibrated with a world file (*.tfw).
Figure 2: The original unenhanced Ordnance Survey StreetView data
The original unenhanced Ordnance Survey StreetView image is shown here for comparison.
Figure 3: The 1: 250,000 tile
When zooming out to show a larger area Map Maker can be configured to hide the more detailed data and display less detailed maps. For this reason each tile is supplied with 1:250,000 and 1;1,000,000 images for use when zoomed out. The 1:250,000 image is supplied as a JPEG file pre-calibrated with a world file (*.jgw).
Figure 4: The 1: 1,000,000 tile
The 1:1,000,000 file is supplied as a BMP file pre-calibrated with a world file (*.bpw).
Figure 5: The Map Maker terrain file (*.ter) provides altitude data for the tile
Each tile is supplied with a Map Maker terrain file derived from the Ordnance Survey Panorama data which supplies altitude data on a 50 metre grid.
