Note that if you already have a licence for version 1 or 2 of Prospect then the licence will also apply for version 3. Also, note that Prospect 3 can be run alongside Prospect 2 so if you prefer to run Prospect 2 for your existing projects then there is no conflict with the newer program.
Prospect should run on any computer running Windows 10. There is no need for any special graphics card. We recommend 8Gb or more of RAM. Since this program is about creating images we recommend using an HD screen (1980 x 1080 pixels) but it will function on lower resolution displays. The amount of disk space required will depend largely on the geographical extent of your projects but expect to need a minimum of around 5Gb of disk space for the data.
Before you can use Prospect, as a minimum, you need to install data describing the three-dimensional shape of the land across Great Britain. Download here: GBterrain.terDb. Note that this is a large download (1.2Gb).
The Forestry Commission produces a variety of useful datasets that can be used for free. These can be found at: http://Data-forestry.opendata.arcgis.com
Prospect can make use of two of these datasets:
The National Forest inventory shows all of the woodland in Great Britain as a set of polygons. The polygons are classified by broad categories such as conifer, broadleaf, mixed-mainly conifer, etc. There is not data about species, height, or age but it makes a valuable addition to the context and we recommend that you make use of it.
The data showing the whereabouts of Forestry Commission tracks is useful for making the maps and views in Prospect more intelligible.
Using the terrain model and aerial photography it can sometimes be difficult to see lakes and water courses. The Ordnance Survey Open Map data includes data on water so we have extracted this and put it into a separate files which can be downloaded here: http://mapmaker.com/GB/GBwater.db
